Question:

How best to practice for volleyball tryouts?

I'm trying out for the high school volleyball teams this coming August with four years of experience. Generally, I play DS/libero. I'm looking for advice on drills I can work on at home (with and without a partner) to prepare. I'm also curious as to how much I should work on hitting/setting/serving. Any other tips/help for tryouts and being a better volleyball player would be much appreciated. Thank you!

  1. My best advice would be to try and play as much as you can, just practice peppering, if you dont know what that is let me know.

    If you have a sand court near you go and play 3 on 3 or 4 on 4 try to get some friends to go and play because ive been playing sand competitively for 5 years and i love it and i realized that it helps me when i go to play on courts that it is much easier.

    And if you are going to play a libero you really dont have to work on your hitting/setting/and serving unless they arent that great.

    The best tips i can give you are to just get out and play and practice. Best of luck!

  2. I've played volleyball for about 7 years now,I'm a setter but i've played libero & outside, but something I've recently learned, and its really effective when setting, is to watch where your passers platform is placed. And kinda cheat towards that way. You have to trust your passers though, and sometimes they can move their arms at the last moment which makes it harder to chase down the ball, but once you have good passers, and have trust in them it makes setting easier, and your not as worn out as fast because you have insight of where your going for the second touch.

    Also when you set you want to act as if your belly button is attached to the poles, like an invisible string is connecting you to the pole, and no matter how far the ball goes you square up to the pole. And place the ball about as high as the antenna, and a foot or two off the net. That way your hitters are confident that they can swing away w/o hitting the net, and the other team isnt ready for a easy block. If the ball is really close to the net, the blockers on the other side of the net have it made. Its like a trap. And for blocking, if your poistioned towards the out lines turn your hand in towards the court a bit so that if you block the hitter, the ball wont fall out. And you gain a block and possibly a point.

    Also you use your legs for just about everything, so leg conditioning, and working up your vertice would help sooo muchhhh. I do tuck jumps over a crack in the ground, or something like that, and getting a jump rope and jumping for a while builds up your leg muscle too. Also wall-blocking to get jumping in, and watching your hand placement.

    Hope i helped, and good luck.

  3. I don't know a lot because my granddaughter is only 12.  Her mother however signs her up for all of the clinics in order for her to learn the tricks...Plus her sister teaches H.S. math as well as coaches Track a VB and volunteer coaches during the summer.  My youngest said she rides her a little harder than the rest.

    She has been involved in sports since she was 5 for the city teams now she plays for the school teams...Soccer, Track, Volley Ball and Basketball and Swim competitions.

    I guess what I'm saying is do all of the sports it keeps you fit and in shape.  Probably the High School coaches have already been keeping an eye on your progress.

    Good Luck!

  4. okay..well great passing drills we do are;;

    we have you and your partner about 10 feet apart and have one person be the tosser. the person tosses the ball while you have a kneee pad or stuffed animal on your back WITHOUT MAKING THE TOY DROP WHEN YOU ARE PASSING, so it keeps you low. try doing as many passes for a minute. this drill diff helped.

    you chould diff practice your setting hitting and serving. you may have to set a high ball. you may have to do a back row attack. and depending on your coach's roataion, you may have to sereve. so i would diffewntly practice those skills as well.
