  1. Recycle everything as much as you can, bio degradable waste in the compost pile, glass in glass pile, paper, metals. You can , if possible grind up metals and spread them on the ground to help remineralize the earth, espescially if you are growing crops or plants etc. Paper would probably decompose in the compost pile as well.

Water is probably one of the most important resources of them all. You could probably recycle water to various extents, depending on what means you have available. If you have a water toilet, for example, you could use grey water (used water from dishes, baths or showers, laundry etc) to flush it with. Just collect grey water in a holding tank, filter it or not. most sediments would probably collect on the bottom of the tank, something you could clean out periodically.  If you want to be really bio friendly you can use only bio degradable organic earth friendly cleaning agents like tea tree oil. It's very good for your skin and scalp, fights dandruffs, psoriasis, acne etc. Don't get it in your eyes, though. It's strong stuff, and burns. There are tea tree shampoos, dish washer detergents, landry detergents etc out there. Using such organic claening agents, you could also use this grey water for watering plants, and trees as well as toilet flushing.

You can also use grey water to wash your floors.

Insulate your house well. Put large double pane glass-  windows and doors to the north, to let in a lot of light without letting in too much heat or direct sun light. Sky lights with blinds, are also an option. Keep your house clean and dry, and it'll prevent bugs from wanting to congregate. The little sugar ants are harmless, and rather beneficial to you as they act as natures cleaner, and also eat other bugs. They love cochroaches. I have no bug problem, and live in perfect harmony with all of nature's critters. And I've never used pesticides, nor ever had use for them. Neither I , nor my kids have ever been sick. We eat organic unprocessed foods, and cook our meals from scratch. we drink filtered water, juices, milk and tea (no pop). Our bathroom cabinets has no drugs in it, just an emergency med kit with snake anti venom, only to be used in worst case scenario.

When we planted our trees, we put pieces of foam around the roots, and have feed pipes that go to different depths. We put glass bottles upside down in the pipes to ceate condensation, which then drips back down on to the roots. All this cuts down on the watering needs, and we thus save on water.

Last , but not least, look to create windmills, for both electricity production, or for straight mechanical applications, like running a fan or something. use solar too, if possible. Solar ovens aren't too hard to create either. A water tank painted with a flat black paint absorbs plenty of heat for showers. Place it on the roof.
