Question:

How big are sand sharks? (Destin, Florida)?

We are vacationing in Destin, Florida right now and earlier my parents came back and said that they were talking to some people who said that they saw some sand sharks along the sandbar a couple miles down the beach from where we are. I have been looking them up on the Internet and am very confused. I looked on youtube and there is video picturing them as tiny, yet on wikipedia they say they can go from 5-9 feet and then others say they are the same as tiger sharks (11-14 feet long).

Should I be scared when I go parasailing and jetskiing tomorrow? Are these aggressive? Do these attack?

Sorry I have been watching Shark Week on the Discovery Channel haha...

  1. i love love love destin, florida

but yes, they are starting to be known for there shark problems

don't risk it. if you hear people talking about sharks, DO NOT get in the water. sharks can't distinguish food from humans, so don't take the chance

usually if there is a shark spotting, the water will be off limits. so you probably wont have a problem.

and as for para sailing at jetskiing tomorrow, don't worry about it. the sharks aren't going to jump out of the water and attack you.

have fun on your trip! don't be scared of the water!

  2. I go surfing every chance I get and have seen my share of sharks out here... oh yeah, I live in the Destin area, in any case, they aren't out to get you and you'll be fine, especially on the jet ski and parasailing, if a starving shark were actually looking for human it wouldn't mess with anyone on a jet ski and can't get anyone up in the sky parasailing, just have fun and don't worry about any kind of sharks... granted the bull shark is my biggest worry, but as the statistics show, I gotta better chance of winning the lottery, and I ain't quit my job yet.

  3. Okay. Now I'm technically I am an expert on these sorts of questions.

I'm thinking that you are talking about sandbar sharks. They vary in size range according to where they live. Like around Destin. I say 5-13 feet.

But sandbars aren't what you need to be worried about. The bull shark is what you need to be worrying about. The bull shark's territory is in water around 4 feet - ?? deep. Sandbars usually aren't aggressive unless you intimidate them. Bull sharks will come at you as soon as they see you. No questions asked.
