How big are the storage lockers at hostels in Europe?

I'm going to Barcelona and Venice in the next few weeks and will be staying at hostels at both cities. It's my first time going to Europe or staying at a hostel and I'm not familiar with what to expect. Would a rectangular tote with wheels, about the size of a carry-on, be too big for the stoarage lockers at a hostel?

  1. Some of the Hostelling Internation (HI) hostels have gym sized lockers (Milan), but some have a smaller ones. Bring your own lock just in case.

I've travelled with a carry-on sized backpack so when if I needed to cram my stuff into a locker, I could take some stuff out and squish my backback together. (Some of the streets in Venice are quite narrow, so you won't want to be carrying a large backpack where you go.)

Good Hostels will allow you to keep your bags in a holding area or behind the desk for part of the day.

  2. They are different sizes at all hostels. Usually under the bed, and made of strong chicken wire. I've also seen 24"x24" wooden cubes. If you do not bring your own lock, you can pay for one at the front desk. They are really made for soft-sided bags, like backpacks or duffel bags. You may have some difficulties as you have a fixed-sized bag. Don't be afraid to ask them to hold the bag for you behind their desk. For the most part, they are honest. Just be sure that all of your expensive items are with you.
