Question:

How big do FILET MIGNON steaks come? i see them on the menu but i dont know how big they are?

  1. I have been to a few Steakhouses, and as the Filet is my favorite I order it quite a bit.  Sometimes you get a choice between sizes, but I don't think I have seen a resturaunt that serves one bigger than 12 oz.


  2. The fillet is cut from the center of the tenderloin - so it's limited by the size of the muscle of the steer, usually about 4 or 5 inches in diameter.  

    What determines its total weight is the thickness.  Usually one cut about 1 1/2 ins. thick will weigh about 8 oz.  A really thick one (2 ins.)  will be about 12 oz.  If you cut it much thicker, it won't stay upright on the grill.

    ALWAYS order it no more than Med-Rare.   Otherwise, it gets tough and dry.  You may as well stick with the sirloin.
