I have some guppies that i need to get rid of before going off to college. How big do they have to be to sell? How much would I expect to get per pair or per guppy? I have a local LFS store that I know will take them.

  1. Hi :-)

I currently have 30 3 week olds and another 3 females about to drop. I sell mine to my LFS for 0.30p each.  He sells them for £1.50-£2.00 each.  Not alot but its better than nothing and your helping you LFS stay in business.  The LFS would and can also use them as fish food.  Not a fan of this as i would rather they grew big and strong and went to happy tanks.  But to answer you question you looking at around £0.30p.

    Hope this helps :-)

  2. You have to check with them...

some will purchase from u and sell as feeder fish... usually 1 month or so...

some wil look for ur fins... if its good they will pay more.. Al the best

  3. Guppies are quite common, so unless yours are show stock, you will get very little if anything at all for them.  Pet stores have enormous mark ups on live stock. You would likely not get more than a few cents each for them if they would buy them at all.  Now, if you have show stock from very strong, proven lines, you will be able to sell them to other breeders. Some can go for several hundred dollars per trio, but that is quite unusual. You would know if you had show stock because they would have come from a show line and would have been continuously selectively bred.

  4. There are some smaller pet stores that will take in guppies, however, many do not.

It is not a good idea to raise guppies with this intention, because you only get about 1/3 of the selling cost of the fish (this is only about $1 a fish usually).

They must be close to maturity as well, and it is usually not worth the expense and effort to raise guppies for this purpose. However, if you do have lots of space to raise guppies, selling your extras, or trading for supplies can offset the cost of raising the guppies in the first place. Check with local fish stores in advance
