According to the National Geographic link below, there are over 200 species of anglerfish. Some can get up to a meter long, but most are under a foot (the range they give is 8 inches to 3.3 feet).

Depends on whether you're talking about lakes, streams, rivers, or the ocean.

For example - a bass in a lake might weigh anywhere between 1 and 15 pounds (there are bigger sometimes - but generally)... catfish can get really big too - up to 30-40 pounds

River fish - like trout and salmon - generally don't get too huge. Maybe only a couple pounds...

But when you get out to the ocean - wow the range goes all over the place. Yellowtail snapper, a popular reef fish, are usually only a half pound to pound each... red snapper and grouper however can weigh anywhere between 5-30 pounds or so. But then when you get into mahi-mahi, tuna, marlin, etc. some of these fish can get really big. A 40-pound mahi mahi isn't at all unusual and tuna are frequently in the 100 pound range... Marlin - up to 500+ pounds max.

There's of course smaller and larger versions of all these fish... but as  a general idea, it's pretty close.

I've heard of 16 pounders... catfish that is, over in US. strangely enough i don't know about england, even tho that's where i'm residing currently.

Depends on that angler,some fish small other go for world record.The elite in fishing always go for the biggest bad boy n rarest species.Try to be in this class if u want to be an elite or if u think ur good for it.I have landed some decent size in salt n fresh water fishing,for salt its marlin just over 1400 lbs,fresh is over 550 lbs sturgeon.Want to try the mekong cat n that's over 1100 bout a half a ton.It depends just fish till u drop dead,anything is just as fun when its biting.
