Hi folks,

Pretty much as per the subject, what criteria are used to judge whether a yacht is oceangoing or not?

Thanks

  1. The crew> There are many factors> Age> condition> equipment> If all are in #1 condition> And the crew knows the vessel size in up it to the crew> And where and how long your going for>

  2. In this case, size really doesn't matter. For a motor yacht your main considerations are range (how far can the boat travel with the fuel reserves on board) and stability. For a sailing yacht, these are also considerations but fuel is not quite as critical. For a sailing yacht crossing an ocean, I would at the very least want a full and heavy keel, and masts that were keel-stepped rather than deck-stepped. I've seen very small boats which were insanely seaworthy, and very large yachts that I wouldn't take out on a decent sized lake.

  3. over 6 ft with a 5 hp motor or sail
