How big (how long and wide) a surfboard should i get for my first one?

it doesnt really matter about your height unless you're surfing a good while... go big, around 7'2''-7'6'', or if the waves in your area are small, go even bigger. the bigger the board, the easier it is to catch a wave, and the stabler it is so it will be easier to stand up. if you want to be even more stable, go thick and wide. you can catch a ripple generated by a whales f**t with anything over 9 foot. try renting or borrowing a big board first, so that you know whether you really want to start surfing. its addictive. trust me. im goin surfin this sunday in water thats like 10 degrees celcius... but i couldnt care less coz i love it!

There are too many factors involved for an accurate guess.

I suggest you rent a couple of different types. Your local rental place or surf shop will be better able to give you advice.
