It's a very touristy city, very big and quite old. But that doesn't stop it from being modern. It's a very popular tourist holiday place as there is plenty of culture and many people there speak English.

It's population is roughly 1,605,602 ( that was the 2006 estimation though). I couldn't find the size of it but for more information simply check out wikipedia.
