  1. A sailing boat most definitely can be classed a yacht!! shock horror!!

I'd agree with the person who said over 15-16 foot. In fact we had a 17 ft sailing boat and it was termed a micro-cruiser, so just about came into the category of yacht!

A yacht was originally defined as a light, fast sailing vessel used to convey important persons. In later parlance, the definition came to mean any vessel, other than a dinghy, propelled by sail, power or both and used for pleasure cruising and/or yacht racing.

  2. Anything from 15ft upwards!

It is a type of vessel rather than a size.

below 15 foot it would a dinghy or tender.

A boat can be any size until it is classed as a ship

  3. over 40 feet is considered a yacht... but it depends on the type of boat...eg sail boat is not considered a yacht

  4. a yacht is not determined by size it is determined by type of boat. They can be from 16 to 200 feet.

  5. bigger than a boat.
