  1. Every airline is different and has different regulations and restrictions.  It depends on many factors - the size of the plane, the number of passengers, how much you paid for your ticket, etc.  You really need to check with your airline.

  2. you are allowed to have up to 4pcs. of stowed luggage, and 1 carry on bag. A small bag is the best so you dont have to worry about space in the overhead storeage area.

  3. Your purse and duffel are allowed. BUT, the duffel MUST fit in the overhead compartment and weigh no more than the airlines limit. They won't let in on the plane if it's overweight. You'll have to check it or remove things. Check your airline's website. They all list the limits.

  4. The size and weight of a bag is usually found on the airlines website. Usually for most airlines you can carry on one bag (size should also be indicated on airline website) and one small item i.e. purse, backpack, laptop, etc.

Included is an example from Southwest's website

    http://www.southwest.com/travel_center/b...

Screening and Identification: Checked baggage will be screened and is subject to physical inspection as mandated by the TSA. Customers may be required to present identification. Regulations require name identification on the outside. We recommend placing identification on the inside of baggage, too. Name labels are available at Southwest Airlines ticket counters. Once you've checked your luggage, make sure you receive a separate claim check for each piece of baggage you've checked. Check to make sure that the city shown on the claim check(s) matches your final destination.

Baggage Allowance: Beginning January 29, 2008, Southwest will allow two (2) checked pieces of baggage per ticketed Customer. Size and weight limitations apply.

Excess Baggage: Effective January 29, 2008, you may check a third bag for a charge of $25. Your 4th through 9th bag or item will incur a charge of $50 per piece, and any bag or item thereafter will be $110 per piece.

Weight and Size Allowance: Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage. Effective March 1, 2005, overweight items from 51 to 70 pounds will be accepted for a charge of $25.00 per item. Items weighing from 71 to 100 pounds and oversized items in excess of 62 inches but not more than 80 inches (i.e., surfboards, bicycles, vaulting poles) will be accepted for a charge of $50.00 per item. Any item weighing more than 100 pounds must be shipped as Air Cargo. However, Customers cannot use SWA Cargo unless classified as a Known Shipper as defined by the TSA or TSA approved Indirect Air Carriers (IAC). 5. I don't know where you guys get all your answers from, but I actually TOOK a plane trip (domestic) this past month and here's the scoop.  You are allowed to take one carry-on and one "personal item" into the cabin of the plane ---personal items are defined as - - a purse, a laptop computer, a large camera bag, etc.  and one suit case can be checked in that can weigh no more then 40-50 POUNDS... anything larger then that will carry a FEE....  lately, airlines have been charging for ALL bags that are CHECKED... some are charging $15 for the first bag and $25 for any bags thereafter... I would suggest you check with the particular airline on their baggage policy prior to your trip...  I DO know that SOUTHWEST does not charge for your bag as long as it is within the weight regulations..   ALSO,  should you have a MEDICAL NECESSITY to bring devices used as a condition of an illness or condition,  as long as these pieces of equipment can fit UNDER YOUR SEAT, they do not count as extra baggage... for example,  I must travel with a Bi-pap machine..   Oxygen, however is not allowed to be carried on a plane..  (I had to rent my oxygen at my destination)...
