I am around 87kg and I am not a complete noob, but my turns are not stable yet and I'd like to learn water-start.

  1. Actaully depends a bit what conidtions you are sailing in. Assuing 20 mph ish with 6 - 6.5m type sails then I would go for something around 140-150 litres. You can water-start on any size board, but you will need something you can comfortably uphaul on. If you are sailing on flat water then it doesn't matter how big you go but much bigger than 150l and they can be dogs to gybe.

If you are sailing in strong winds on choppy water you will want to go smaller pretty soon. But although you could uphaul a 115-120l board bit it would not be easy.. in fact I would recommend a bigger board 140- 150l and then buy a smaller board - for you maybe 95-105l - for high wind blasting, chop hopping etc, once you have nailed those waterstarts.
