  1. Rap represents a HUGE decline in their contribution.

  2. Their contribution to, and influence upon modern music is too enormous, and too extensive  to measure.

Going all the way back to percussion sounds having origins in Africa is where one can start.

The wide and extensive use of percussions in Latin American music is mostly due to institutionalized slavery. Of which, the Portugese were the most involved, explaining the heavy use of percussions in many genres of Brazilian music.

Jazz, though it never was, in it's inception a form of music exclusive to one ethnicity or race. Still, since it's earliest days, most of it's development and most of it's "landmark" tunes and sounds were contributions from blacks. Now, the many

sub-genres, or various styles of Jazz, and in my opinion the best styles and sounds of Jazz, are one's originated by blacks.

Everyone knows of the "Blues" and it's being rooted in the deep south, and deep despair of black life. The blues seems to possess a natural compatibility with Jazz, although not all forms of Jazz are subject to blues scales and form. Still when Blues are fused with Jazz they seem to fit like a hand and a glove. The origins of the blues, lay in the Mississippi Delta, hence the

"Delta Blues". There are other styles of blues spawned from these, as blacks migrated to other states. "Urban Blues"(Chicago), "Texas Blues",

"Memphis Blues"(white boy blues), there may even be a distinct "Louisiana Blues", but it's often associated with "Texas Blues".

Then of course, other genres were born of the Blues.

Rock and Roll, was from it's begining first played by blacks, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. I believe it was as a result of having heard the black blues as it was begining to be interpreted by white musicians bringing an element of country sound into the blues. Still it required for this, hybrid to make a circle back to certain blacks whom then perfected it into the first "Rock and Roll".

That earliest 50's rock n roll was at it's core a form of blues called "Memphis Blues".

Since this answer has already become too long, perhaps there will be a future question posted with answers that would complete the rest of this one, in speaking of Gospel, Motown, Funk, Soul..............

  3. Jazz, Rock, R&B, Soul, Blues and Rap where all started by Blacks.
