How can 457 long stay visa apply a permanent residence.?

Hello,

I am in Australia since February 2007 on a visa 457 but I have the same problem. I think on the AU government website it is not so clear. Many people tell me that I have to wait for minimum 2 years before to apply for a permanent visa but some others say I can apply now?? someone who did apply for PR on a 457  without waiting 2 years ?

Go on to an immigration web site and check it out, I believe that a 457 visa holder can now apply for PR after 8 months. be aware that it can take up to 18months for permanent residency to come through and may well cost around $1500  You can go through the paperwork process by yourself but can be tricky at times. best bet is to check it out on the web initially. There are heaps of immigration agencies that will be only too pleased to help and obviously relieve you of some cash

I think you can apply for PR at any time as long as you meet the points system.

Here's my story. I lodged my PR application in May 2007 (from Sri Lanka) but through a friend I was sponsored on a 457. Came to Australia in Nov 2007 but still waiting for my PR to be processed.

The best thing about the PR is that just because you lodge (and make the $2000) payment your whole family is covered under medicare. This meant that my wife's delivered my son last month without having to pay a single dollar.

I've heard that new applicants for PR who lodge after sep 07 are being processed within 3 months.
