How can BMI be a correct indicator of ideal weight?

It only takes weight and height into account. Somebody with more muscle mass or a larger bone structure is going to weigh more than someone of the same height with less muscle and smaller bones. So how can you compare the two using the same scale?

  1. very true, i have gained weight the past several months as i have added muscle, very misleading ,you can be 350 pounds and be in great shape, it is just a tool, no more no less.

  2. thats true

  3. its generally accurate for people who have a normal body shape, but for example my freind older brother is jacked and has a 6 pack no fat on him but the bmi says hes obess , but its only because its the muscle mass

  4. I agree♥ I guess its just a general thing and people take it too seriously. Like a person can have a perfect BMI but still be VERY unhealthy and eat bad and have high cholestoral and no muscle mass but they would think they are healthy b/c thats what BMI tells them. Or someone could have a slightly higher BMI but have much more muscle mass and be way more healthier than a smaller person, but think they are unhealthy b/c their BMI says so.♥

  5. That's true, and the reason why BMI can be very inaccurate.

  6. Yep, that's why it's best to use body fat percentage and waist measurement as well as BMI....or just scrap BMI altogether lol.

  7. There is usually a "disclaimer" near a bmi calculator saying that those could be factors.
