  1. Global warming is going on right now. More / Stronger hurricanes ARE caused by global warming, while less / weaker ones are caused by global cooling.

One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in the first answer. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)

  2. just media nonsense -  a warmer ocean surface means stronger hurricanes - just because usatoday decides to publish one study out of thousands that says otherwise does not change anything

  3. It doesn't.  But scientists are free to put forth new hypothesis and theories.  Each hypothesis/theory will be scrutinized by other scientists.  Those that have convincing evidence and can be replicated by other scientists will survive, and those that don't will fade away.

The affect of global warming on hurricanes (both frequency and strength, 2 separate issues) is an on-going debate in climate science.  This doesn't mean they don't know anything, just that they don't know everything.

  4. Here is what some people are saying and interperated to the best of my ability:

Global warming will first create MORE hurricanes by heating the globe to create more Hurricane friendly waters. Meanwhile, it will melt Greeland and slowly destory the Gulf Stream.

When the Gulf Stream is gone, tempreatures around the world will significantly decrease, and remove serveral of these Hurricane friendly waters. So after Hurricanes increase, they will start to DECREASE.

  5. The warmer air currents shear off the tops of hurricanes.  That's why we've had less severe storms the last few years.

Unfortunately global warming is over and we're going into global cooling again.

I was hoping it would last longer.  I like the warm weather.

  6. There may be global warming, but NOONE can prove that it is not a natural cycle.

You very rarely hear anyone talk about the numerous global warmings in the past.

(you know, when there WEREN'T all these hydrocarbons in the air)

Seems some people are just getting more paranoid, untruths are being substituted for truths and the media justs feeds on it all.

Example - Al Gore should have never got the Nobel Peace Prize. Tired of hearing how us 'average' people need to cut our energy use when all these elitists(like Al Gore) can use 12-20 times the national average for their house. But, of course, they have rational excuses for that.

  7. It's those models they rely on. One day they tell us more hurricanes. When we have less hurricanes, they program the models to spit out less hurricanes. Have you ever seen a dog chase its tail. That is the perfect picture of a global warming modelist.

  8. I asked the same thing earlier, I'm glad somebody did some research.

  9. After hurricane Katrina, there was a rush by climatologists to demonstrate that it was somehow caused by global warming and there was a hugh number of peer reviewed articles which claimed hurricanes were becoming more frequent and more intense.

When meteoroligists pointed out that this was nonsense because to anyone who can count and do simple statistcal analysis, the number of hurricanes was not increasing by any measurable amount and the category rating of the storms was also not increasing by a measurable amount.  So the climatologists went away again and invented new methods of measuring and catagorising storms so that they could 'prove' hurricanes were increasing in intensity.  This also doesn't hold up to critical analysis, so they've doing a U-turn.

  10. Yes, as everything is caused by global warming.

Both record warmth and record cold are also caused by global warming.  And floods and droughts as well.  Some scientist even attribute sunlight and darkness to global warming.

Seriously  - Global warming is a reactionary science.  No one can predict the future, but anything that happened in the past can be scientifically linked to global warming.

If everything is caused by global warming, then believers are never wrong.

  11. It can by shifting weather patterns - simply this:

There are now more tornadoes in New Brunswick and less in Ontario.  They are also coming at different times in the year than they have before.

Hurricanes can be measured in a similar way.  Warmer ocean temps shift the air patterns and what was going to be a hurricane out in mid ocean is now racing with deadly intent to a part of the coast that hasn't been touched by a hurricane in decades.  So now you hear about "more hurricanes in x -state and less in y state"

That is a very bare minimal explanation but should be your best.

I really hope that some people stop living in denial (before they are totally flooded out {insert wink here})

Those who refuse to accept certain facts relating to the changes in weather pattern are in for a rude awakening.  Global warming is not simply a phrase invented to use to put the blame on the US.  It is a clear and present danger that is clearly identifiable by those who have a basic understanding of grade 5 geography class...you know the one where you learn about evaporation, condensation, precipitation.

It really boggles the mind the ferocity with which some people deny common science.

Dan Martin down the page gives you a great answer with all the detail I didn't bother with.

  12. First of all, they don't and have not said either of those things.  This article and study is about intensity, not frequency, as previous studies have been.

Scientists had previously concluded that global warming likely makes hurricanes stronger, but does not affect the frequency with which they form.

Now as your article states, they think increaesd wind shear might offset this.

"Which one of the two — warming oceans or increasing shear — will be the dominant factor? Will they cancel out? We and others are currently exploring those very questions, and we hope to have a better grasp on that answer in the near future," Vecchi said.

    So what's the problem?

  13. Hey they didn't mention El Nino,,,and LaNinya,,,,,both have +/- effects 4 hurricane season..........Global warming will speed these factors up,,and then slow them down
