I have a HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop with an in-built web-cam. Is it possible to access my web-cam without having to go through MSN or other websites. For example can I just take photos by going through my desktop or something similar?

  1. You need a program to control your webcam.  MSPAINT can do this by going to File --> From Scanner.  GIMP has this feature as well under File --> Acquire --> Scanner/Camera.  Active Webcam is another popular free program used to capture input from a USB webcam.  Windows Movie Maker is a good free option as well if you want to capture video from your webcam.  Sourceforge also has a ridiculous amount of free programs that do this including Webcam Publisher, Avin Webcam Capture, Pyhotobooth, Dorgem, Webcam Timer, OV511 for BSD, TimCam, etc...

  2. If it is installed properly, you should be able to just go to My Computer and it will appear there (usually near the bottom, after the drives are listed). Double click its icon and you'll see what it sees (lol). You can snapshot pics and stuff, pretty cool.

If it's not there, try uninstalling any software that it came with (or if you want, use THAT software) and try just installing the bare driver.
