I don't really like the fishy taste but i want to be able to eat un-fried fish or even raw fish without having to gag. How can I do this?

  1. It took me a LONG time to eat fish--to this day I only have a handfull I'll eat.  I would start with a simple whitefish--cod, mahi mahi, dorado, tilapia, etc and go from there.  Of course if you squirt lemon juice over everything you can't taste the fish taste!

Raw fish is different though, not only is it taste, but it's texture.  I would start with 'cooked' sushi like tootsie rolls, california rolls and shrimp tempura rolls, when you're brave enough, step up to spicy tuna and yellowtail.

  2. The mistake most people make about seafood is how they buy it.

If possible chose your fish whole (like a seabass) then get the fishmonger to remove the scales and fillet it for you.

The reason for this is ...it is easier to check the quality of seafood when it it whole than filleted.

Look for shiny clear eyes that are not sunken

The skin should have fresh seaslim on it if it is trully fresh.

Plus the skin will have an irredesent shine to it.

and if your really feeling brave take a look at the gills. When the fish is fresh the gills are bright red, but as the fish ages they turn brown.

Be suspicious of fish that has had its gills removed.

Truely fresh fish does not smell fishy!!!!!

If you go to a good quality sushi bar, their fish has to be fresh to serve it raw.

Don't buy your seafood in a supermarket on Monday because it will be what is left over from the weekend.

The same with restaurants dont order seafood on a monday because chances are it is left from the weekend.

Even if your told it came in fresh from the wholesalers on a Monday it will be seafood that has sat on ice over the weekend.

(Depending on season)  eat seabass, sole, flounder (if your in America)

Halibut, Hake because all these are mild and sweet tasting fish.

Get to like them before your try an oily fish like a sardine.

    regards

    Kevin

  3. It sounds like the reason you don't like fish is because you have never had it served really fresh as it should be.  Rule of thumb...do not eat any fish that smells "fishy"...it is not fresh.  I live in Hawaii and many people come here from the mainland and say the same thing, and won't even try it.  Just put the "fishy" part out of your mind, find yourself some really fresh fish if you want to try sashimi or poke.  Otherwise, try a mild white fish that is either baked or sauteed...you can move on to fried fish later.

  4. Just start eating a lot of it, regardless of your mental disposition towards the food
