Question:

How can I add a separate thermostat to my wall air conditioner?

My wall air conditioning unit works great for cooling down the house, but the thermostat does not accurately measure the room's temperature. Depending on the outside temperature, the air conditioner stays on for too long or too short of a time. Unfortunately, I have been reading that this is a common problem for wall/room/window air conditioning units.

My current control does not let you select an actual temperature, I just turn it one way if I want the house cooler and the other way if I need it warmer. If, I leave the k**b in a position that's producing a good temperature one day, when it get hotter the next day, that same position will make the house cool down too much.

Adjusting this during the day is not much of a problem, but as the temperature changes when I am sleeping, I am woken up freezing cold or sweating hot.

I saw a similar question asked here earlier and this device was suggested: LUX WIN100 (amazon). It looks great but will not work with my 240 volt unit.

  1. Honeywell makes a remote thermostat. No wires and can be installed anywhere

  2. If u need to cool more then 1 room then u need whats called averaging relay and a temp. sensor in each room u need to cool. This relay will take all sensor readings and run unit based on the average of that.Usually used in commercial buildings.

  3. Sounds like you have a faulty thermostat or the the unit compressor may be shutting off during peak usage and is able to catch up at night when it cools off.

If your unit has not been serviced in a while it could be the problem.

Dirty outdoor coil would elevate the discharge pressures and put strain on the compressor and cause it to cycle off even though the fan is still running.

This could be causing the erratic temperature swings your experiencing.

Installing an accessory thermostat could be a waste of time and money. It's usually best to not try to redesign the unit.
