How can I adjust rear speaker volume when the computer does not register them?

The Speakers are 5.1 and hooked up to a Sony A/V reciever which is then plugged into my computer.

your speakers will not register to your computer coz you have not connected them to it. So your best bet is to adjust the volume in your receiver. does your reciever support 5.1? maybe that's the problem. i'd suggest you connect them directly to the computer if your soundcard supports 5.1
