Think about why you want to advertise in the nationals.  Usually, it's too wide an audience to be effective for new businesses.  For example, if you're selling a product for owners of Rottweiler puppies, you may find some who read your ad but you'd be better targetting specialist publications and clubs.

Even if you sell something that has "universal" appeal, it's still better to target it.  Say you sold baked beans.  Most people buy them but you'd do better promoting them to B&B owners who use them every day.

Closely targetted marketing is a much more efficient spend of your marketing budget than generalist advertising.

As others have said, press releases are a good way of attracting attention.  They must be newsworthy, not plugs for your product or service.  Give the readers useful information and they'll come to you.  I write a monthly column for the industry magazine for a particular sector.  In it I give the readers hints and tips on promoting their businesses.  Separately I have a small advert for the seminars that I run.  They recognise my name from the articles and book on the events.

One good way of attracting press coverage is to have a charity angle.  We organised an art exhibition where a picture was put up as a prize for donations to the mayor's charity.  We had local coverage on the opening night, coverage for the amount raised and again when I presented the picture to the winner.

You can submit press releases to PRWeb for a fee or free at OpenPR.com. Make sure the press release is compelling and someone would be interested in republishing it in the news.
