Question:

How can I afford adoption?

I was recently told that I wouldn't be able to have children of my own. When I looked into adoption I discovered that it is incredibly expensive. It is less expensive to adopt a child that is waiting here in the US but the children that are listed are all over 10 or have pretty severe disablities.

Maybe I am naive but I have always heard about the countless nameless children that need a forever family and now that I am at a point where I could provide one I feel like I am getting smacked in the face with all of these fees for opening my home and heart.

Anyone have any great ideas on how to fundraise for an adoption or a website or agency to look into?

  1. This makes me so sad.  Why is it a child over 10 doesn't deserve a family

  2. I believe it's illegal to sell a kidney or I would suggest that as a means of raising the funds. Maybe you could just donate a kidney to someone wealthier who was in need. You would be doing a really good thing, and maybe that good deed would karmicly float back your way.

    good luck in your quest

  3. The statement that there are only older or disabled kids available in the USA is wrong.  We adopted two little boys, 3 yrs and 1 yrs, through the state foster care system.  I also know several other adoptive parents who have done the same thing.  There are plenty of younger kids out there needing your help.  Yes, some of these kids are 'high demand' cases, but many are just normal kids, or are only slightly delayed, and only need a good home to be good kids.

Adopting through the foster care system costs next to nothing.  And, in some cases, you will be able to get assistance to offset the costs.  You may have to foster first, but it is worth it.

  4. ***** what the h**l you **** For if you wasn't going to keep it!!!??

  5. Lots of want-to-be mommies just work for the local DHS for several years as model 'foster care providers'. Take in their worst-cases with ample ardent fervor, and you'll certainly accrue enough brownie points to earn distinction above others when permanent placement is considered for the 'adoptable child of your dreams'. Special value for white kids, healthy and well-adjusted and under five years of age.

You don't want to mess with too much emotional 'baggage'.

  6. We use Family To Family Adoption Inc. out of Richmond Texas...we are from the upper midwest.

I usually have the phone number right here, but this time all I have is the website.

    fam2fam.org

They are a great little agency that really meet your needs and treat the birth mothers with the most respect I have found.  They also have ways that can help you..I believe they have a finance program or take credit cards.

I know the figures seem very high...but it is worth it.  I believe that Fam2Fam is around $17000-$20000.  We had several families do rummage/bake sales for us.  There was even a family that did a supper and charged per plate!  They donated their time and the food.  If you are involved in a church, there are many things the church people will do.  Our church family (though small [6 memebers at our first adoption]) took a special offering while we were on our way to Texas to meet our precious baby girl...they gave enough to pay for all of our travel expenses and buy a nice digital camera to take pictures of our bundle with.

There are also many grants and loans available to adoptive families depending on which agency you use.  We were able to get a no interest loan for adoptive couple through the ABBA Fund ~ a Christian organization that works with Christian adoptive couples.  The options are out there, it just takes some creativity.  I also started working while we were waiting and we put all of my paychecks into preparing for children.

    Good Luck!

  7. If you do foster care the adoption process is easier and less expensive by far. You can even ask to only get infants and then if after a few months in your care, or however long the parents have to straighten themselves out, you will be given the option of adopting your foster child, which will only cost $1,000.00. Plus you get to claim that on your federal taxes. Good Luck!! There are many families with problems, and not all of the children are "messed up", they all need love and a home to feel safe and cared for no matter what age or background.

  8. We just adopted a newborn girl- 2 days old. So there are babies, as for affording it there are grants and loans. Just use the internet to your advantage and just type in adoption loans and grants.  The Complete Idiots Guide to Adoption was super helpfull when we did our homework. Look into Adoption Centre of Kansas they rock!!!!!

    Good luck

  9. First of all, I would go straight to your local social services.  That is where adoption is the least expensive and they will be able to give you the most unbiased information because essentially, there is nothing in it for them.  That being said, waiting for a healthy newborn could take a few years, but it could still happen.    Also, a lot of the children listed on websites are the ones that need families the MOST, there are some that aren't listed because they are more likely to be adopted.  Where I live, the website is only for children whose parents rights have been 100% terminated, and they are unlikely to find forever families because of various disabilities.  There are many more children than what the website shows.

There are also loans and such that you can get from the government and other agencies for adoption if you insist on going the private/international route.  Not saying that route is bad... I have seen a lot of happy families come together that way, I just tend to prefer the almost free local route.  A good site is:  http://statistics.adoption.com/informati...

    Good luck :-D

  10. Please don't fundraise.  I find that really...well tacky.  And actually offensive (being an adoptee).

please just contact adoption agencies and find out the best way to fund an adoption.
