How can I ask my home school company to take there firewall off of the computer THEY gave me?

Ok, my home school company provided me a computer (a crappy one with a HUGE firewall problem). It has ContentProtect on it. If I sign out of it, I can't get online it completely shuts down my internet. I can see it blocking me from obvious adult content but this is ridiculous! I can't go to www.tvguide.com because when I click listings it says the website is blocked because of "gambling" content. I like to check out the yahoo and cnn headlines online and when they were talking about Mark McGuire's steroid issue I couldn't even read the article because it was blocked and said it was related to "drugs". This is crazy! What if one of my school classes assigns me a project and I choose to do it on steroids? It will be IMPOSSIBLE to do! I'm just trying to see whats on TV tonight for crying out loud. How should I ask my "School Advisor (every student is assigned one that updates your classes and sends the supplies you need to fulfill them) to remove/change the settings?

  1. Call them and tell them you have a cd you are trying to download for school and it will not let you and chances are the technical desk will tell you how to remove it

  2. if the computer is still theirs (meaning you only 'borrow' it to do work) you cant really change anything

if the computer is yours (property) you could just ask them, or try to see if you can unistall it via the control panel

  3. 1) Get their phone number

    2) Ask your mum if you can use the phone

    3) Lift receiver

    4) Dial their number

    5) When someone answers, ask to speak to their IT dept

    6) Explain how you feel (see your own post!)

    7) Ask if they would be prepared to change the firewall settings

I guess if it is their computer though, they're perfectly entitled to put whatever restrictions they want on its use. Maybe you'll just have to learn to use another computer to check out the sites it won't let you access. Do you not have a family computer you could use or go to the library or something.

  4. What do you mean how should you? You just explained everything. Just ask the school advisor.

    Good.

The Internet will rot your brain.

    CNN is full of lies.

    TV guide is evil.

You should be doing your school work.

There is an acceptable use contract you and your parents signed that could end up costing you thousands if you tamper with  their equipment or violate their contract.

  6. You need to find another computer to use for non-school-related Internet surfing.  The PC they provided for you is for SCHOOL.  If all else fails, go to the public library and use theirs.  You are obviously using a computer that has access to Yahoo's sites since you posted this.

You should be able to contact the school with sites they need to "open up".  However, they may not be willing.  Have you read/signed their computer privleges document?  I'd start there.
