Question:

How can I ask to work drive thru/cook in fast food

I work at a fast food place. It is very slow right now. I am 16 and just started less than a month ago. We are supposed to be constantly working, finding something to do. If there is nobody in the entire restaurant, I have to find something to do.

I do a lot of cleaning, stocking. Basically, I make sure the dining room, playroom, and bathrooms are clean. I take care of the customers, bus tables, etc. I am the front cashier.

I really want more hours, and drive thru gets a lot busier. I just started less than a month ago. I was able to do drive thru a couple times. A manager started to train me, but then the front got busy, and drive thru was slow when I got back. I only took like 2 orders and helped with like 3 orders. I was kinda slow (first time remember.) Nobody has offered to train me since, and there is always somebody else assigned to drive thru.

How do I go about asking? I just don't want to be too demanding or anything because I just started and I want to look good and be noticed as a good employee. How do I ask so I look like I'm eager to learn and help?

  1. You have time on your hands to do things when there are no customers right? Well ask the people who do the job how they do it. Ask is you can help them out and do the tedious tasks they don't like to do. After a while you might ask the manager how to be appointed to the jobs you like better. Hope that helps.

  2. Just jump in and help drive thru when front line is dead. Let the managers know you want to learn everything. But you may want to be confident in knowing the front and drive thru very well before moving on to another position. Do not really ask. Go over and help whenever you can! They will notice I promise, ask questions when you are not sure. Eventually you will learn all that you want.
