How can I be a good babysitter?

They'll probably tell you what they want to do and then you can just go from there.  Just play with them like you wanted someone to play with you when you were a kid.  Be silly, make up games, laugh a lot, dance, just be your "kid" self and they will like you.  But also remember to be in controll.  You don't want them walking all over you.

First, that you have some kinda background, meaning references...  I know I don't let my nieces be sit if I don't know who the  babysitter is...

but, parental and family references are good.  Other adults who are confident in you can also give references.  

These days, you need mutiple references, cause there is too much distrust.

You can reference your parents, aunts and uncles, and other customers, but if you've already satisfactoraly baby sat, you can use that as a reference.  

Get some references, like camp counsellor, or something like that.

You should always get permission first, but you can post flyers at local stores, doctors offices, and any other places parents with young child go.

When I babysit, I usually let them "help me with lunch", if they are old enough; I give them task to do, like cleaning up after themselves (which they may not like, but it will surely help the parents in the long run); arts and crafts (such as cheap jewelry making, sand art, and 'pictures for mommy/daddy'); I make 'worksheets' with simple addition/subtraction and spelling (whatever is age appropriate) to help them learn; and I dance, sing, and act silly with them to both wear the out and occupy them at the same time.

one thing most babysitters dont do is play with the kids. crafts, coloring, play house, go for a walk, whatever it is that they want to do (within reason). I know that when i babysat the kids always liked it because their parents don't play with them all the time so I would come over and acutally play with them. It's a huge treat to kids to be the number one focus for a while. If they enjoy themselves when you come over you'll be asked to baby sit again.
