  1. Learn *everything* you can about photography.  Newspaper photographers work on all subjects, in all sorts of conditions.  You'll need to learn a lot about composition and all technical aspects of photography.  Then, learn some journalism, because newspaper photographers are not just "shooters".  You don't say how old you are, but if you're still in school, start taking pictures for your high school or college paper.  Join a photography club, where you can get critiques from others.  Put together a portfolio of your very best shots and take it to the photo editor at a local newspaper.  (When you do that, edit down the 500 pictures you shot to the best 1 or 2, before you show it to anyone.)   Ask for advice, and offer to shoot an assignment for little or no pay.

Professional photography is a rewarding career, but don't kid yourself -- it's work.  It will be tiring.  It can at times be dangerous.  You need a great sense of timing and the ability to produce consistently excellent results.  Getting the occasional lucky shot won't cut it.
