Question:

How can I be a tutor?

I finally signed my contract as a full time teacher! I want to make some extra money doing outside tutoring. However, I am not sure of places where I can apply. I am certified in bilingual education and in mathematics (4-8). I have worked as a teacher assistant and tutor (for school district) for a year. I graduated with a 3.5 gpa from A&M. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks

J.

  1. You are a teacher for full time so have some colleagues in same school. Discuss about your aim and earning I think they can help you. Your expectation is not high so you can reach your goal easily.

  2. Fortunately, you have plenty of options for tutoring.  First of all, you can join a larger tutoring center, where the organization has a pook of qualified tutorers and acts as an agent to place them with students who need help.  While not a bad place to start, I wouldn't recommend this option.  The center tends to give you less than 50% of the hourly rate that they charge, and you are often forced to sign non-competes that would prevent you from doing any competitive work for a year or two after you leave.

I recommend finding students to tutor through networking.  Since you are just beginning with tutoring, you should make your hourly rate slightly lower than the competitors in your area ($5 less could make a big difference to a parent in this economy).  Post ads on Craig's List, let friends know of your services, and make teachers from other school districts aware of your services.  It is important to build up a resume with references of satisfied students and parents who can act as a reference for future parents who are looking for qualified tutors.  And, don't forget that when you build a relationship with one student/parent, they tend to refer you to their other friends too!

    Good Luck!
