Question:

How can I be fined for jury duty when I didn’t get a summons?

Today I received a notice that I must appear in court for not replying to two jury duty summonses. Problem is I only received one, and I was exempt because I was a student at that time. I graduated two months ago so I can’t be exempt again, and the whole “I didn’t get a summons” excuse probably won’t fly.

Could it be a clerical error? Should I call them or just go to court? I’ve never been to jury duty so I don’t know what to expect.

  1. Go down and talk to them.

  2. Talk with the clerk of court at the court that you were summons to.

  3. First of all no one is exempt from Jury Duty. It is one of the few responsibilities defined by the constitution. No error involved you must appear and if you don't you can get fined and 90 days in jail without a trial for each offense. It is called Contempt of Court and it is the only time an American has no right to a jury trial. I suggest you be there because if you do not show you are screwed.

  4. I'd say you made a mistake. First of all:

don't think that you are the first person to try to lie their way out of jury duty. I'm sure the court has heard hundreds of excuses. I would suggest you go personally to the court and apologize for your mistake. Bad decision (to ignore it)

  5. go man and get the clerk sue,,,,and tell them that im a right ful citizem and i have a honur and i should not b treated like dog....ask higher authoritiies and investigate...

  6. Go to court. What's your fear - that someone's going to think of you as an upright citizen?

  7. Did you follow up prior to your summons date to confirm that you were actually excused?  I remember reading that you had to do that when I requested to be excused from duty (although I didn't follow up on it myself, lol).  I'd just call them and go from there.  If you have to, let them know that you'd be happy to serve jury duty now in the hopes that they'll get rid of the fine.  Depending on how your area does it, you may just have to spend part of a day sitting in a room.  I hear it's not that bad.
