  1. While Mamma there has good intentions that is not a good way to live. Being overly antiseptic is what is causing your problems to begin with. The only way to develop a healthy active immune system is to become exposed to pathogens. While washing your hands is a good idea, so that you don't transmit infections to others or to yourself (after using the restroom). What you should do is to eat healthy, make sure you drink plenty of water, and fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Exercise also helps to improve your immune system.

  2. First of all, get into the habit of washing your hands OFTEN with HOT water and lots of soap, especially after touching things that others have touched.  I carry antibiotic wipes and the waterless antibiotic hand cleaner with me for times when I am not around soap and water.  Like when I am at the store or out somewhere.  If I pick my grand daughter up from day care, the first thing we do in the car is what we call "debugging".  We wash with the waterless stuff.  This is the biggest way to prevent the spread of colds and flu.  Another thing is to tell your friends to keep their distance if they are ill.  Stay away from them until you know they are not contagious anymore.  In flu season, we spray our door k***s and desks and file drawers several times a day with Lysol or some other disinfectant at work.  If it is something everyone touches a lot, it gets sprayed.  When you sneeze, wash your hands.  Don't touch your face after a sneeze, it is possible to give yourself pink eye this way.....

As a medical "professional", the other answerer should know that hand washing is extremely important, and I bet he does his share of it.  Doctors are the ones that recommend the hot water, heat kills germs!! They also recommend washing your hands often, especially during cold and flu season.  If you wash your hands so much that they get dry, use hand lotion. I wash my hands an extreme amount every day, due to my job, and I very rarely get dry or chapped hands from it.  A hand soap that has lotion in it can be helpful. Hand washing is not only important to keep YOU from getting sick, but also helps keep from spreading things to others around you.  People like those who are young and could become very ill, or the elderly, where illness can mean a long stay in the hospital, or those with diseases, like diabetics that can suffer complications if they get sick.  Handwashing with soap and water is necessary for every day good health and to help prevent the spread of disease.  It does not make mutant strains of virus,  the constant use of antibiotic hand wash, and misuse of antibiotic drugs is known to do this, not soap and water.  Don't forget that things like Hepatitis A can also be passed from person to person from not washing your hands.

  3. please don't listen to mama smurf when she says you need to use HOT water on your hands when you wash them. This is probably worse for your hands. hot water will dry out your hands more easily, wash away the essential oils and leave your hands more prone to infection. regular tepid water will do just fine. washing your hands with "HOT" water will not kill anything anyway, because the water isn't hot enough.

i do recommend carrying around the waterless hand cleaner though.

get exercise and eat a balanced diet.
