I have almost finished a batchelors degree in Engineering majoring in Electrical engineering. Additionally I have completed the requirements for a diploma in engineering practise and also hold an Advanced Diploma of Electrical Technology. For electives I have completed business subjects including marketing, economics and business statistics. I have also completed a postgraduate elective engineering financial control at credit levels. I dont have a great academic transcript with some failures.

I have applied for quiet a few positions relevant to my education, work experiences and my general career interests but never hear back. Its very depressing considering a global skills shortage. any thoughts?

  1. maybe you come across as over qualified my son had the same prob but ajusted his c.v accordind to each job applied for

  2. What country are you from, what sort of position are you looking or applying for and where?

  3. Your not,

Review your resume and submit it to employment agencies.

Your college will look over your resume for free, even after you graduate.

A large portion of companies today do not do direct candidate  searches, you will get a at least a couple of interviews.

  4. Do you get interviews? If not check your resume, it may need some work.

If you get interviews, try working on your interview skills, and personal appearance.

In the U.S. most states have a job services place that you can go to that will help you with both for free.

  5. It is a LOT more difficult to get interviews than most people suppose, no matter how good your job skills. A common error is to send a resume to the HR department, they never respond. You need to locate an engineer and send your resume to him personally. (You can find an engineer by talking to the company telephone operator a lot of times). You can also get (random) names from the automated company directory, just hit 3 keys at random. One of these random people will probably be able to direct you to the correct person.

Try going to a conference in a field that interests you, and approach engineers during the breaks. Or mail a resume to somebody, and then call him by phone at the same time that the resume lands on his desk.

  6. Have you checked your resume? Buy a pizza for an English major and have him review your resume and cover letter. (Your query included no less than twelve spelling, typo, syntax, grammar, etc. errors.) Good luck!
