I am wondering if at 46 I should learn SQL Server 2005 and then later apply for a DBA position? But I read that all the offers are asking for a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience!! I am scared to learn the material then not be able to get a job. I got fired from my hotel job so I am a newbie & will learn from scatch.

  1. For most companies, experience is more important than just the certification when it comes to DB administration... and they're being proven right about this all the time.

If you have no background in IT whatsoever, you're pretty much out of luck.

Try to find a job that at least introduces you to IT work, and offers options to learn on the job. That way, you can start building experience... which will help you later on.
