How can I become a NASA astronaut?

Question

Ever since I was a kid I've been wanting to visit other planets. I was told that NASA is sending astronauts to Mars in 2010 and I would like to participate in it. How would I become an astronaut?

Getting in to the Astronaut Corps is very competitive.  I won't discourage you - here's the NASA page that talks all about it.

And... there will be LOTS of other jobs to do that would offer exciting work as part of getting us to Mars.

Talk to NASA or check out their website but there are several ways.  All the original astronauts were pilots, in the Navy or Airforce.  Today, not all astronauts were military pilots before getting into NASA.  You need to be very good in science and that means good at math.  NASA has Space Camps and you can learn more about it there as well.  Good luck.

I work at NASA Johnson Space Center and there are many factors in developing characteristics that NASA looks at for astronaut selection. Use this NASA web site to check out what you can do to become an astronaut.

The process of going to the moon is in full gear - and we expect to arrive on the moon by 2015.  By the year 2020, we should have established a Moonbase, in which we will try to understand how to inhabit a different body of mass than ours.

The next phase will try and get a man on the planet Mars around 2030 and hopefully, by 2050 we should have a permanent outpost on Mars.

However, if "Barack Obama" is elected President, then you can scrap all of that.  His intention is to simply remove the "Manned" Space program.  All other programs will continue.

It's going to be MANY years before we send men to Mars. Many years ! Half the unmanned ships we send there crash.

Are you serious ? You need many years of college before you can even think of such things.
