Honestly the best way to become a better learner is to believe that you are intelligent.  For the longest time I did not believe that I was as smart as everyone else.  I found out that by having that attitude I did not get myself anywhere.  As I started to believe in myself I started to put myself ahead.  Now I am taking harder classes than most people at my college.

by being toutored, or trying harder and focusing on 1 thing only and nothing else

Honestly, it's just a matter of trying. It's like weight lifting. It takes time to build your mind up, but amazingly, it does happen. With enough effort, I think the average person can increase his or hers ability to learn several fold. Read, and keep reading, then write and keep writing.

Try and get an overview of a subject you are interested in before proceeding to examine its parts. If you are interested in the Crimean War then read an encyclopedia article about it

and then if you want to learn about Russia's role in the conflict it will be easier for you to understand because you have a knowledge of the events and players already. It is too easy to get bogged down in a given author's obsession with a particular topic only to find out later that his interpretation is not in the mainstream at all but somewhere out on the lunatic fringe. If you had only had a broader knowledge of the topic to begin with you could have more easily discerned that his view was bonkers and not have made the mistake of writing an important paper with his ideas at the forefront thereby making yourself look foolish.
