Question:

How can I become a recruit leader at Navy Boot Camp?

I know that there are little "supervising" jobs that enlistees can have while at boot camp. Some people have told me that you can volunteer for these jobs, while others have said that you get picked if you show good leader skills? Are both scenarios true and how can I become one of these leaders?

  1. A few pointers for basic - Don't volunteer...don't be the first for anything and don't be last...

  2. You can get all gung ho and get yourself a leadership position. Let me know if that works out for you. I recommend staying under the radar. then again if you do get a supervisory position you may be rewarded with extra rank at the end of bootcamp. or an award that you can brag about after graduation. You will however take the brunt of the abuse for your underlings if they mess up and you might get fired from that supervisory roll if they mess up (not the navy of course)

  3. The RDC's will typically ask for volunteers. However, they ask for the vol. before they tell you what your volunteering for. For many jobs, they want someone with some skills. For example, they'll look for a recruit with JROTC or marching band exp. for the Recruit Chief Petty Officer. Someone with good handwriting for the yeoman.

If you want a job, ask for it.
