How can I become a resident of Australia?

I am a US citizen. I want to goto Australia, but stay longer than what a visitor visa will allow. I am self-employed (on the internet) so I do not need a work visa. I'm not a student so I don't qualify for a student visa. I've searched citizenship.gov.au and immi.gov.au and it seems my only option is a visitor visa, but those are only good for up to 90-day stays. I want to stay in AU for at least a year or perhaps permanently. What are my options?
