How can I become less afraid of my math class?

I'm in 10th grade and this year I'm taking algebra 1. My freshman year, I took basic algebra..which was a class of only 6 and they were my close friends. But this year, I'm in a very large class with only 3 others that were in my basic algebra class. The rest are freshmen and 8th graders. It's my third class of the day, and I've only been to the class twice, but I sit there the whole time wanting to get out as soon as possible. I'm not that great at math..so when I get called on, I feel so dumb. I feel really anxious, nervous, intimidated and scared when I'm there. How can I get over this? I've never felt like this before and it's really only just going to get worse as the work gets more complex. Do you have any advice or suggestions on how I can get over this?

Thanks.

  1. It seems that your more relaxed in your class if you have your friends around, so try and make new friends (might be a tad hard for people, but strike up a conversation--don't forget to smile). This helped me a lot, especially when I didn't get something I just asked them to help me.

I have the same feeling on getting called on, I hate that, especially when I get it wrong.  It's really embarrassing. Try getting help from the teacher (even if you don't need it) then you'll probably will feel more relaxed when she/he calls you.  Also, you'll get the information better, and maybe get better at math.   Try participating (yeah, put your hand up).  This seems absurd, yes, especially when you hate answering questions when they call you, but try it out, he'll call on you less.  Yes, you'll probably answer a couple questions when you put up your hand, but after, the teacher will start asking other people.  Plus, its easier answering something you know, rather than something you don't know.

Hey, hoped I helped, and if none of these are working, try talking to your family or close friends about it, they know you more.  Also, try your best and try to have fun.  =)

  2. it seems to me that you have Arachibutyrophobia.

    good luck!

  3. Can you get a friend to help you?  I am still afraid of math and I'm 30.  I never thought it would matter-and I was so wrong.  I have to do every simple math problem a few times even if I use a calculator because I have no idea if it's right or wrong.  It is a big disadvantage in life because math and simple algebra are in everything.  You are trying to get help with it so that's good. Don't give up!  Good luck!

  4. Well...im not too sure how to make you smarter because math is my best subject and has always come naturally to me...but

just remember that the other people(well the normal ones) dont wanna be there either and what you have is stage fright

i used to have it...but i took theatre in my freshman year and i got over it quickly

but it wasnt just that...if you dont know the answer it doesnt hurt to guess

    you arent stupid

trust me i just finished algebra 2 trig(10th grade) and normally the answer i called out was normally right

just remember to do your homework!!!!(it helps)
