  1. craigslist.  You can find a lot of other people there trying to get better as well who offer advice.

    -I have spoken.

  2. Chess is definitely a thinker's game, so don't be talking to your opponent/other people, or goofing around and not concentrating. You have to focus HEAVILY. Clear your mind of everything that isn't about the game, and put all your mental energy into it. It's a Zen thing.

Another good thing to remember is to not make decisions too quickly. Really think about every move you make. And if your opponent tells you you're taking too long, congratulate them on being so observant.

  3. learn the patterns of the good set up moves, how to establish a good position, and how to get out of a set-up.  It takes practice.  Read some books or pick up tips online - then practice either against real people or computer games.  Specifically try to set up strategies that you have read about.

  4. this may sound really cheesy actually really chessy.....

But all you need to do is dround out the noice from the people and stuff around you. If that does work just play with a deep breathe and a smile.

  5. Be well studied, and prepared for the strategies your opponent will apply.  If you know what move set he is getting into, then you can focus several moves ahead and play a killer game of chess.

  6. Well, I'm certainly not the most focused person in the world, butI do O.K. at chess.

It's really not a Zen thing.  It's not about emptying your mind.  If your mind is empty, how do you intend to play chess?  One method is just to be thinking of chess so much that there's little 'room' to think of anything else.  Always be looking at possible moves, always be thinking about the game, etc.

In fact, for me, I think having a tune in my head helps.  I'm not sure why, but I know some of my better games have been with tunes stuck in my head.  I don't find the music distracting, but at the same time it helps to filter out other thoughts that might be more distracting.

Ultimately though, it depends on how you think, I believe.  Personally, I sort of visualize a piece in the square where I intend to move it, so what helps me focus may not help someone else focus.
