How can I begin to market original fonts? Sell to a distributor? Market them myself?

I am a graphic designer with many years' experience in signs and typography.

In addition to some other freelance work that I sometimes do, I really like to design new typefaces. Where can I look more thoroughly into marketing my work? Any of you had experience in doing this?

What software is best these days for the purpose?
