  1. I've been a Lifeguard Instructor and Aquatics Facility Manager for many years.  There is really only one way to get good at Lifeguarding Techniques and to stay good at them over time:  PRACTICE.  My suggestion is to find another motivated student in your class and pair up with them, and if you are able to meet outside of class hours do that to practice your skills.

Once you've finished your class and gotten your certification don't stop there.  When you start working as a Lifeguard, remember that a good Aquatics Facility will provide additional training and emergency drills to help keep your skills sharp.  But again you can practice on your own whenever you have the chance.  If a genuine emergency occurs on your watch you're going to want to be able to respond confidently and effectively.

Another technique to sharpen your skills and raise your confidence level is to do mental exercises.  If you are at poolside or on Lifeguard duty, try to imagine that one of the swimmers you are looking at has a sudden problem.  "What if that kid swimming across the pool had a seizure, what would I do?" --- "What if that man diving hit his head on the bottom  and ended up unconscious, what would I do?"  ---  "What If those two folks near the deep end paniced and grabbed onto each other, what would I do?".  Things like that.

Lifeguarding is a great job but does require both a certain level of physical ability plus a lot of mental toughness.  It is not for everyone.  It sounds like you are taking it seriously and are doing what you can to be good at it.  That's great!  I think you'll do well in your class and turn out to be a really good Lifeguard!

  2. Use the techniques in every day life. Also keep reading on it and get some one to study with and quiz you.Good Luck.

  3. If you know the material and are just nervous about remembering at the right time don't worry about it.  I was the same way until my first save, and when it happened it all just became instinct.
