How can I breed maggots?

In England, they use maggots to clean wounds of infection and dead skin. I would like to keep maggots, how do you keep them alive?

  1. Depending on the species, maggots are the easiest things to raise.  But, there are many different species.  After all, they are the larval stage of some insects like flys or beetles.

    If you're talking about fly maggots, then all you need, once you've got them, is rotting meat, or fruit, again, depending on the species.  Do not allow them to get cold by keeping them in air temperature of about 80 degrees F.  

    Once they pupate, you'll have to deal with the adults, whatever they might be.  Remember, they don't remain in the larval stage very long.

    The ones used in medical science are more or less sterilized.  They feed them on meat, or whatever, that is free of bacteria or viruses.  The meat is NOT rotten or impure in any way.

    Watch the movie Gladiator, and you'll see just how far back the use of maggots to clean wounds went.


  2. Hang a piece of rotting meat over a tray of sawdust. The maggots will drop into the sawdust and you can collect them easily.
