How can I build and electro magnet that simulates opposite pulls on opposite sides?

  1. Opposite pulls on opposite sides? Not quite sure what you want there.

    However -

    Simply wind an insulated wire around an iron rod (iron is better than steel, if you can find it). Hook each end of the wire to a DC power supply. Keep in mind that if you don't have very many turns of wire, you are creating very close to a short circuit for your power supply. Batteries could overheat and rupture; a lab power supply might overload if it doesn't have current limiting capability.

    Once you have power flowing through the wire, you have an electromagnet. One end of the electromagnet will attract the north end of a magnet placed near it and the other end of the electromagnet will attract the south end of a nearby magnet. Both ends of the electromagnet will attract a nearby ferromagnetic object.
