  1. Gradually build up your distance. Once a week only, go for a run longer then normal. Only add 10% distance per week.


  2. If you are new to running you might try the "couch potato to 5k" plan on coolrunning.com's website, it works and if you do as the directions state you aren't really sore at all

  3. I'd say regular running is actually the best way of building up endurance for running...

    You don't say what you are aiming for?  

    Once you can run a few miles without a break it's a breakthrough and you'll find longer distances easier.

The best way I increased my mileage was by lengthening my run time.  A friend told me to run for a length of time then walk for a short time.  In my case it was run 5min walk 1 min.  He explained I was keeping my heart rate in an ideal zone to increase muscle efficiency.  I didn't get faster, but I was able to increase my mileage every week by at least a mile.  Good luck!
