How can I burn avi files to a disc to play in a dvd player WITHOUT converting to dvd files?

I burned 6 movie-length avi files onto a dvd-r disc, but only the first file plays in my dvd player, even though the dvd player has read the disc correctly, as it displays the 6 titles correctly on the menu page. I've burned and watched avi files on the dvd player before, so I know my dvd player can play avi without conversion. Please help!
