How can I calm down for golf tryouts?

Golf tryouts are tomorrow and I went to the range and the course I'm gonna be trying out at and the range yesterday. I am really really nervous!!!!!!!!!!!!! At the meeting to tell the coach that you were going to try out, there were about 25-ish people there compared to 50-ish last year. I'm in 8th grade and there were only about 6 8th graders there, and the rest were 7th and 8th. The team is made up of all 3 grades, and in the past, the majority has been 8th grade.

I hit a 56 about a week ago, which is about what you need to make the team, but today my mind was into 5960843 things and I really couldn't concentrate and I shot bad. I would look early and bring my body up before my club met the ball. I usually don't do this, but today for some reason I did. I am really nervous and I can't stop thinking about it. How do I calm down??

Thanks a lot,

-Matt

  1. Probably a good way to calm down is to visualize the course you are going to play.  Visualize shot-by-shot what you want to do on the course, starting with the first hole.  If you want to be really careful, take the club that you are most comfortable with and use that off the first tee to make sure you hit the fairway.  And don't worry!  Just do your best and that's all you could ask for!

  2. Matt,

I was a PGA Golf Professional for 7 years.  But my advice to you would be to add one stroke to each hole.  So that being said a par 3 is now a par 4.  And so on.  This way when you par its like a birdie but will make it eaiser on your mental game.  Course management is the key.  If you hit a bad shot get the ball back in play.  Don't try to hit a great shot and then end up in more trouble.  Good Luck!  -Andy

  3. Matt I have been in your Exact position.

You just need to loosen up your grip.

    Think about your swing.

    And look ahead.

Don't think about pressure at all.

I know this sounds like the normal talk.

But just do like you do at a normal round of golf.

    It works.

  4. Just play your game.  That's what you do on the course, just play your game.  I actually played the last three holes friday with the local high school team when I caught up to them.  They were having tryouts and those two kids I played with just played like they were the only ones out there.

  5. you should probably just belive in your self and you will do good

    - good luck you can do it
