How can I carry anything up a ladder?

I read in a national newspaper that Health & Safety will prosecute you if you don't have 3 points of contact on a ladder when you are using it (two feet and one hand must be touching at anyone time). So to climb a ladder, to raise a foot up the ladder, I'll have to place both hands on the ladder.

But how can I carry a bucket up a ladder? I have to take a foot off to climb which leaves 1 hand and 1 foot on the ladder and 1 hand on the bucket ?

Has this country gone mad ???????????????????

  1. ahhhh . yeah right. what you gotta do is wear a hi vis jacket, that will solve the problem. and you must also nail a hook into your ladder. then with your hi vis jacket, you go up a rung. then phone the life guards in case you miss a step. be brave move up again . yippee then you can hook your bucket up another rung. this will take 4 and a half hours by which time an illegal immigrant will have cleaned the windows and ******* off with your fiver. yes!!!! this country has gone mad.

  2. I am a firefighter and regularly climb 135m ladders.  Different techniques are used depending on the job in hand.  We carry 75mm hose, rolled, over the shoulder then carry out a "leg-lock" on the ladder where we are able to work "hands-free".  It's so secure one can lean right back with no probs.  Wouldn't recommend this at all without proper training.  We have to take calculated risks to save lives.  Don't risk yours!

  4. There are some very strange rules out there.

The only thing I can think of is a pulley mechanism type thing, that way you can climb up the ladder and then haul up the bucket.

    Hope that helps!!

  5. ladders are made for climbing, not for working on. if you need tools or materials at an elevated work area then you should build a scaffold or cat walk. it takes some extra time and effort but gets the work done faster and safer.

  6. Use a body belt or harness,I do.
