  1. make a scar-crow

  2. remember you haffta know their next move

breeeeeeeeeath(im no hippie) with the bird

    breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...

BUT RELEASE THEM IN FOREST OR SOMETHING AFTER!

  3. No, you cannot catch them, most all wild birds are protected even when they utilize your crops.

Even if you could catch or kill them legally, for every one you do, more would simply come in to replace them. You may think you are winning a battle, but you will surely lose the war.

Please don't try to kill all the birds in the area, so many others depend on them!

Your main safeguards are tree netting and repellants. Most people use tree netting and it is widely available at nurseries and online. It is an investment, but if you feel the need to have every piece of fruit, and all pristine, then that is the price of doing business. Commercial operations factor in the losses.

"Imperfect" fruits can be relegated to other uses without waste. They can be processed, fed to livestock, or composted... spread the wealth.

Fake owls, snakes and flutteries usually only work temporarily and are dependent on the species of birds.

You may also consider checking into a pepper spray to repel them. The residue on leaves and fruit will leave a bad taste in their mouth and help with other pests and diseases also. Check organic gardening sites for recipes and available products.

Consider netting the lower portion of your trees to reserve the fruit for your use and allowing the upper levels for the birds. This works for most people in my area that have several trees for home production.

If you have "acres and acres" you should still have plenty to share with the birds because they work more for you by eating the bugs that chew and spread disease and would cause even greater crop damage. Birds won't kill your trees, but the bugs they control will!

Also consider fighting fire with fire. Set up bird houses/nesting boxes that will accomodate the more territorial species... they will chase away most others. Check into attracting real owls or other avian predators such as hawks to your orchard also.

If you learn about the natural balance, you may be able to establish a more beneficial symbiotic relationship in your orchard and come to realize that you really are better off with the birds.

    Consider it.

  4. Don't Catch them! Just think if you were that poor little bird, Living to find food!

  5. No, it is NOT legal to catch them for any reason.  They are protected by law..look up the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.  Please deter them as some others have suggested.  You cannot stop nature for your own selfish purposes.

  6. It's NOT legal to catch or HURT them, PERIOD.

You can put out deterrents, like fake owls or fake snakes on the tree branches. You can also hang shiny strips of material on the branches (they'll swirl around in the breeze and should scare off the birds).
