I just got a new Leopard Gecko and 24 crickets. I don't live close enough to a store that sells cricket, so i want to catch them. Is that ok for it.

Thank you.

  1. It's NOT because they can be sick it's because i don't see how ANY wild insect now would not be contaminated by some form of pesticide for their species or others. This is why it is HIGHLY dangerous to feed your reptiles stuff you find in the wild.

  2. Eeeek!  Please do not capture wild crickets for your Leo!  They can be diseased, and carry parasites.

Petshop crickets are not much better (they offer little nutrician), and you will need to learn how to feed petshop crickets (termed 'gut loading') before you feed them to your Leo (this isn't hard).

Also, crickets can be ordered online in quantity, and are easy to keep until your Leopard gecko is ready for them.

Diet is SO very important to your Leopard gecko.  Below I'm providing a link you may find quite informative.  Though it's a bit lengthy, please take the time to read it all (your gecko will be very appreciative), especially the part on gut loading crickets for your gecko.

An informed Leo owner has happy and healthy animals.  Do your homework/research.

These endearing creatures have been known to live 20 yr. and older, so do your part, and learn how to provide for it.

I hope this has been helpful.

    Enjoy!

  3. no you can not catch crickets and feed them to ur gecko they carry pestesides that can harm your gecko i breed my crickets because i live far from the store so i just start of with a ten gallon tank and get 100 crickets to start and then they will grow lay eggs and more babbys!!! never have to go to the store again i do the same thing with meal worms

  4. Catching crickets out of the yard is generally not a good idea because the crickets could have diseases. There is also the possibility that the crickets could have been sprayed by pesticides, which could be poisonous for your gecko.

  5. dont bother catch them. just order or buy a box of a hundred. its pretty cheap not more then say 10 bucks. put them in a ten gallon tank or a plastic storage box of some sort. line the bottom in egg cartons or toilet papper tubes for them so they dont crush each other. use a spray bottle to mist the sides once a day for water carefull not to over do they will drown. feed them lettus or carrets. and have a small box in the corner for them to lay eggs in, fill it with reptiles sand. so its clean of perisites and they will start breeding. once you get it going and learn you wont be having to buy or risk using out door bugs.

  6. you can get crickets from just about any pet store. they have a softer shell then outside crickets. i have a leopard gecko and he loves them! i think petsmart sells the small crickets for 9-15cents each

  7. its not the best thing because the crickets could be sick and have diseases. but so can store bought crickets. i would suggest calling your closest vet and asking them for their opinion.

    good luck!
