  1. The answers above are correct as for legal methods. The only other option you would have is to drop off the face of the earth sort of. No more family, leave all your friends behind... that is how desperate people begin the process of assuming a new identity.

  2. My step daughter tried to change hers.  They wouldn't let her.  Just pay what you have to or file for bankruptcy.  Do it the right way, or it might come back and bite your *** if you don't.

  3. Not happening for the social period. Name change goes thru the local court; and is filed for public record, so that your new name is referenced to your old name and record. Credit won't get better that way.

  4. Wrong! New name, new SS! now you will be known as AKA!!! First off, the IRS fowns on people who have two identites! One drops off the face of the earth and the other one still has to pay his taxes! If your creditors find out what your new name is, you will still have to pay them! Filing bankruptcy isn't that difficult, and it gives you a clean slate, and hopefully, makes you have some restraint on running up bills and maxing out credit cards!!  Either way, you will have to establish a line of credit, and your past record doesn't just go away! It stays there for 10 years, whatever name you use!! There are places where they will do the paperwork for you for very little money, but you have to go to Court and face the judge!  You are allowed to keep some of your posessions, such as one car, a house and keep up the payments, or, if you want to dump everything, just tell the Judge, and you will have to make arrangements to hand them back to the creditors!! Most of the time, they don't even appear in Court. The credit card debts will be wiped out,(you don't have to give back anything you bought with them, as they are now used merchandise, and they couldn't do anything with them!) The Court appearance takes about 10 minutes, and then in about a month, they will send you the discharge of debts! Now, if you still think you would be better off changing your name and SS, think about this!  You still have to go to Court, and tell the Judge WHY you want to change your name! What are you going to tell him? Sir, I have a bunch of debts and I want to get rid of them by changing my identity! Yeah! Right!!! He will probably kick you out of the building, and, it is NOT easy to get a new SS either! Loosing the old one, they will just give you a duplicate, or, if you are in the Witness protection system!! It's up to you!
