Question:

How can I change the CD Key of my Windows XP so I can activate it?

I legally own both Copies of Windows XP SP2, but one of them, I have "Activated Too Much" so I bought a new one. The one I "activated too much" is also being used on my other computer, so it just seemed right to get a new copy.

Here's the problem, without a Valid CD Key of WinXP SP2, I can't play all the games I just installed on my hard drive. Why? They need DirectX 10, which you cannot get without a valid CD Key, so, what I need to know, is how can I go into my Windows folder, and Change the key to the New WinXP SP2 CD Key I just bought, so I can activate it without losing my games?

  2. If Fred's method doesn't work (unless your copy of XP is different from what I've seen, you won't have that option...) you can do the following:

Re-install windows using the new disk and key.

You will want to do an "in place upgrade" as it is called.

During the install process it will "See" your currently installed copy of XP and will ask you if you want to REPLACE or UPGRADE the current version.

Tell it to UPGRADE.  It will NOT wipe out your drive OR your programs.

The system WILL be a little "flaky" right after the upgrade until you get all your service packs re-installed...  Just re-apply the XP SP2 or 3 upgrade and re-install IE7 if you have it on your system currently, then any other security updates that windows sees it needs, and you will be good to go.

  3. Right click My Computer and choose Properties.  Scroll to bottom and choose Change Activation Key.

    Good Luck!

  4. I think that this Knowledge Base from MS will help you -

If that doesnt work (because it is more specific to Volume Keys), try

Let me know if they work or not!

  5. Are you sure they aren't asking for the Product Key, found on the side of your computer tower? I'm not sure what a CD Key would be, or how it would be in your Windows folder :|
